Thanksgiving Reflections

A guest post by Amy Pittman

“November – a month dedicated to thanks.”  This was one of my first entries in my running thankfulness journal this month.  After, this past spring, reading Ann Voskamp’s “One Thousand Gifts.”

I took up the challenge to count 1,000 blessings.  One thousand ways God has blessed me.  When you take up a challenge like that it makes every day look different.

When you are going through the day with heart eyes wide open,  You see what you have always missed.

But even with this in mind, I still miss things.  Get distracted with the “to do’s” and become blind to grace.  I’m a work in progress.

So, with all this in mind, this Thanksgiving has so much more meaning to me.  I have become, over the last several years, more aware of the beauty of this holiday.  Now I think I realize why...

Thanksgiving is a whole holiday dedicated to praise of our Creator.  Of taking a long look at all the blessings and graces He gives us every day.

This holiday is meant to be slow and meaningful.  To pull those we love close and together praise Him with complete abandon!  To follow Psalm 100...

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
— Psalm 100:4

Here is the challenge ladies:

Start today, right now, giving thanks!

Don’t wait until the fourth Thursday of November.  Do it today, because He is worthy today.  Because “of his goodness, and his wonderful works to the children of men” (Psalm 107:8).

And maybe we can learn thanks and learn to praise no matter the circumstance.

And just maybe it will be contagious to those around us, and it will stretch into next year.

Then before we know it “thanks” is like breathing.

Let’s live a life dedicated to thanks!
